Police statement as man is arrested for armed incident

A MAN has been arrested following an armed police incident in an East Riding village.

Armed police officers attended a property in Eastgate, Kilham at around 7.30am on Thursday, March 4, following reports that a man was in possession of a weapon inside a house.

The incident at the village near Driffield has been brought to a safe conclusion and the man has been taken into custody on suspicion of firearms offences.

Humberside Police have said that there was no one else inside the house at the time of the incident and added that there was not thought to have been any risk to the public throughout.

However, officers remain at the scene to provide reassuranc­e to residents and to continue investigat­ions.

During the incident, police officers could be seen lining the street on Eastgate after they closed the road leading up to the property, telling Driffield and Wolds Weekly that they were in attendance “to protect the public”.

A passerby to the incident said that there were around 14 police cars in attendance as Humberside Police told the publicatio­n at the time of the incident that they were “concerned for the safety of a man inside, thought to be in possession of a weapon.”

A spokespers­on for Humberside Police said: “Armed police officers are at a property on Eastgate, Kilham in the East Riding, this morning following reports that a man in possession of a weapon was within the address.

“The incident has now brought to a safe conclusion.

“A man has been arrested been and taken into custody on suspicion of firearms offences. There was no one else inside the property, and there was not thought to be any risk to the public throughout the incident.

“Our officers will remain at the scene throughout the morning to provide reassuranc­e to residents of Kilham and to continue our investigat­ions.”
