Best places to pick up a pumpkin

HALLOWEEN is just a round the corner and pumpkin picking is fast becoming a firm family favourite for seasonal days out with the kids.

There are a number of pumpkin patches in within an hour’s drive of Hull for a fun family day out.

We have taken a look at where you can go to pick your own pumpkin, and when the events are due to open.

Scalby Grange

Scalby Grange has a large pumpkin patch at their farm in Scalby Lane, Gilberdyke, and there is no entrance fee.

The farm will be open from Friday, October 8, from 10am to 5pm, and then every day except Mondays.

The farm said: “We don’t operate a booking system you can just turn up and we don’t charge an entrance fee.”

They charge by pumpkin weight and have everything from mini pumpkins that fit in the palm of your hand to monster-sized, and prices range from £1 to £10 each.

Families can warm up afterwards at the Pavilion Café, which will be open and serving Halloweent­hemed snacks, hot dogs, burgers, and hot chocolate.

Sandy Bottom, Hedon

Sandy Bottom’s Pick Your Own Pumpkin Festival is sure to be a hit this year.

There will be 50,000 pumpkins of all shapes and sizes to choose from. Large, small, orange, white, green, blue and even the warty ugly ones, so you’re guaranteed to find the perfect one whether you’re carving, cooking or simply displaying.

To make the event run as smooth as possible, organisers have introduced a booking system.

Entry is £1 for those aged over three. Pumpkins range in price from £1.50 to £6.

This year, the event will be raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Associatio­n.

There will also be various street food stalls and drink vendors attending.

Weekend dates include October 2 and 3, October 9 and 10, October 16 and 17, October 23 and 24.

It will also be open half-term week from October 25 to October 31.

Pink Pig Farm

Pink Pig Farm near Scunthorpe is also running its annual event, with added extras such as a supervised carving session and there will also be Windle the Witch on hand to teach little ones how to make potions.

The attraction, in Holme Lane, Scunthorpe, gives each child their own mini wheelbarro­w, and they will be able to carve their design with help from Windle the Witch.

The pumpkin festivals runs from October 23 to 31, and every child under two will receive a free pumpkin.

There is also Halloween-themed food in the Greedy Pig café and Playbarn café.

William’s Den

William’s Den in North Cave has grown a bumper amount of pumpkins ready to be picked.

The attraction, in North Cave, said: “We have a field of around five acres which has produced more

than 20,000 pumpkins.

“Lace-up your boots, slip on your gloves and wellies and head out into the field of rambling vines to pick the perfect pumpkin. Knobbly ones, wrinkly ones, all different colours, shapes and sizes.

“There’s a bountiful supply of shiny pumpkins, quirky gourds and bumpy squashes.”

There is a small charge for entry and pumpkins will be individual­ly charged according to their size.

Families will be given the chance to get some Instagramw­orthy images with assorted photo opportunit­ies along the way.

The Pumpkin Patch Produce

This farm in Bewholme, Driffield, open to visitors from Saturday October 9, from 11am to 4pm, opening every Saturday and Sunday up to and including Sunday, October 31.

People can also go along to their farm shop daily to buy a pumpkin, which is open from 9am to 6pm.

No booking is needed and entry is free, with prices for pumpkin picking starting from £1.

There are also pumpkin carving sessions, which last one hour and must be pre-booked.

The Beverley Pumpkin Patch at Butt Farm

This pumpkin patch has thousands to choose from and a wide range of varieties from polar bears to knobbly goosebumps.

There are wheelbarro­ws handy, and wellies are advised.

The Pumpkin Patch opens on Friday, October 8.
