THIS week we talk to Carl and Nikki South from The New Trinity Social club in Southcoates Lane. For many years The New Trinity was owned and run by the very popular husband-and-wife team of Alan and Angela Pearson.

They considered retirement for quite a few years and following Alan and Angela hitting the headlines just before retirement when they won the National Lottery along with a syndicate of some of the club members, they eventually decided to retire almost a decade ago.

Alan and Angela passed over the keys of the New Trinity to Carl and Nikki South and the club has proved equally successful and has gone from strength to strength.

Carl South said: “From the very start we decided to give a warm welcome to everyone that came into the club and with an open mind we took on board all of the member’s suggestions and ideas.

“Weekends were basically looking after themselves to a certain extent so we focussed a little on week-day events, trying to make the most of all of the club’s facilities.

“We sponsor and support several snooker, pool and darts teams throughout the week playing on the top of the range, competition standard tables and boards.

“The club has always been a hub for darts league players and we are just about to introduced Wednesday night JDC darts coaching aimed at getting those under the age of 18 involved in the sport.

“Darts is growing in popularity with the younger generation at the moment it seemed the ideal time to encourage them to come and take part and for people passionate about darts to get involved at grass roots level helping juniors enjoy the game.

“It’s proving to be extremely popular across the country as it’s a fun start for players of all levels from the ages of 8 to 18.”

■■The JDC darts starts on Wednesday, October 20, at the club. For more information please call the club on 01482-374233.

On Saturday afternoons the club run a Horse Racing club where people discuss form, hot tips and to organise trips to race meetings.

It holds poker tournaments every Sunday afternoon and Sunday night is a Quiz Night.

On Saturday nights it features guest artists on stage from 8.30pm supported by the New Trinity’s singer and resident compere Paul Lewis.

Paul has been at the club for seven years now.

Paul said: “I only started singing by chance when I was at a neighbour’s house who sang on the entertainment circuit under the stage name of Melody J.

“She had her PA system set up in her living room to rehearse songs and as time passed one thing led to another and she challenged me to get up and do a song.

“She seemed impressed and with loads of encouragement from Melody and my family I decided to buy my first PA sound system and started to put a show together.

“I entered the Hull Daily Mail’s Talent Trail competition more than 25 years ago and it gave me the confidence boost I needed to start singing seriously.

“I remember my first booking was on a Sunday afternoon for the sum of £80 at the Lord Charles pub in Greatfield Estate.

“The audience were lovely and at the end of my show they asked me to do another spot. They sent a glass around the room for donations and raised another £60 for me to stay on for another hour.

“Over the years I’ve been lucky to work in Greece for a summer season, I then went on to be the resident compere at the Southcoates club for three and a half years before moving to the now closed Trades and Labour club.

“When I left there I went back on the road for a year before taking up as resident compere when the then resident band finished at the New Trinity club.”

This Saturday night you can catch Paul Lewis as he introduces singer Jade Scott to the club.

Jade who is a local singer-songwriter who appeared on the ITV show Britain’s Got Talent back in 2015 alongside her brother the international recording artist Calum Scott.

An excellent artist in her own right, Jade has since gone on to release her single Dynamite, which is available on all major platforms and she has supported her brother at several concerts.

Other artists appearing at the New Trinity club include Leanne Smith on Saturday, October 16, John Robert on Saturday 23, and the excellent female vocalist Toni Ellis appears on Saturday 30.

Among the other gigs of note this week includes Johnny M at the Ryder Club this afternoon, County singer Pete Jones is appearing at the Ritz Country Music club with resident compere Becky Brown on Thursday night and Geoff Aday is singing at the Highland Laddie on Friday night.
