CURRY POWDER

Making your own spice mixes is a thrifty and healthy way to ramp up the flavour of your dishes. Spices bring colour, aroma and a whole world of flavour to your homemade meals. However, some shop-bought seasonings contain unexpected calories, and you may find you already have the ingredient­s you need to create your own.

If you want to get creative in the kitchen, you could try making your own spices with our easy-to-follow recipes below. Add them to your favourite curries, sprinkle over your roast vegetables, or create flavour-packed marinades for your meat, fish or tofu – there’s no limit to the flavours you can create. You can make batches to store in airtight containers by doubling or tripling the recipes and adjust the amounts of chilli or cayenne to suit your taste. With these simple, vegan-friendly mixes, you can be confident your spices are healthy and taste amazing too…

This easy-to-make curry powder is perfect to add to all your favourite Indian-inspired dishes, sauces, and more.

Grind 2 tbsp coriander seeds, 2 tbsp cumin seeds, seeds from 6 cardamom pods using a small food processor or the end of a rolling pin. Add 1 tbsp ground turmeric, 1 tbsp chilli powder, 2 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp mustard powder and 1 tsp ground cinnamon and mix well.

TIP: You can also use ready-ground spices but grinding them yourself makes a big difference to the flavour

FAJITA

This tasty mix can also be sprinkled over Slimming World Chips (available to buy from Iceland stores) when you want to shake things up.

Make by mixing ½ tbsp each of chilli powder, ground cumin, garlic salt, onion granules, dried oregano and paprika.

CAJUN

Use as a spice rub for skinless and boneless chicken breasts, or salmon before cooking. Or mix into fat-free natural Greek yogurt with a little lemon juice for an easy and delicious dip.

Simply mix 1 tsp each of chilli powder, ground coriander, cumin seeds, ground cumin, fennel seeds, garlic salt, ground ginger, yellow mustard seeds, dried oregano and dried thyme

PIRI-PIRI

You can go hot or mild with this blend, which takes its name from fiery piri-piri chillies. It’s delicious with skinless chicken, lean steak or scattered over veg before roasting. Mix 3 tsp each of garlic salt and onion granules, 2 tsp each of chilli powder (mild, medium or hot) and paprika, and 1 tsp dried oregano.

JERK

This spicy sweet Caribbean seasoning is famously used on chicken, but also tastes great on prawns and other seafood. Mix 2 tsp ground cinnamon, 1 tsp each of ground allspice, black pepper, ground cumin and paprika,

½ tbsp dried thyme, and ½ tsp each of cayenne pepper and ground nutmeg

Tip: If buying pre-mixed spice blends and seasonings, choose brands that don’t contain sugar, flour and oil.
