Motorists braced for traffic chaos as Beverley Road work set to start
REDUCED LANES AS ARCADE IS RESTORED
EXTENSIVE restoration work set to be carried out in Beverley Road is due to kickstart six months of traffic chaos on one of Hull’s busiest roads from Monday.
A large-scale restoration carried out on Brunswick Arcade starting next week will cause the area between Norfolk Street and Trafalgar Street in Beverley Road to be reduced to two lanes.
Hull City Council has said the work will start on Monday and is expected to finish in spring next year.
The authority said that, in the interest of the public, the restoration had to start immediately.
A section of the arcade behind scaffolding has been vacant for more than ten years and has become a target for arson and antisocial behaviour.
The authority advises people to avoid the area during peak times when possible or to expect delays as vehicles will share the narrowed carriageway.
Councillor Daren Hale, leader of Hull City Council, said: “Brunswick Arcade is a key building on Beverley Road’s skyline, but it has been a blot on the landscape for too long.
“This work will secure this heritage building.
“This will mean a single lane in both directions and the closure of the bus lane for a small section of Beverley Road.
“I know, as a road user of this route, this is frustrating, but we cannot take any chances with public safety.”
Traffic flow will be maintained in two directions, with one lane northbound and one lane southbound remaining
open throughout the works.
Ward Councillor for Central Ward Councillor Aneesa Akbar said: “It’s fantastic to see work start on this eyesore that has blighted the city centre end of Beverley Road for many years.
“The area is currently undergoing significant regeneration and Brunswick Arcade is a major part of that picture.
“I would like to offer huge thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund who have made much of this work possible.”
