Knights’ spot for KR’S Lewis

-

HULL KR half-back Mikey Lewis is in line to make his international debut after being included in the England Knights squad for Friday’s game against Jamaica.

As first reported by the Mail, the 20-year-old has been rewarded for a breakthrough season in Super League after catching the eye of Knights head coach Paul Anderson.

Lewis scored eight tries and laid on seven more in only 12 league appearances for the Robins.

The Hull-born playmaker also enjoyed productive loan spells at York City Knights during the 2021 campaign, the highlight a try at Wembley in the 1895 Cup final.

Fellow half-backs Lewis Dodd and Will Pryce have also been named in a young squad, along with outgoing Rovers forward George Lawler.

Dodd and St Helens team-mate Matty Lees will undertake postgrand Final fitness tests before joining the squad later this week.

“Through the Knights programme we’re investing in the future of England Rugby League, and although we’ve had a few injuries and promotions to the senior set-up, it’s created opportunities for others to come in and show what they can do,” said Anderson. “I’m really excited about working with this group of players and helping them realise their potential.”

As part of the Knights’ preparations, Anderson’s side will take part in a joint field session with Shaun Wane’s senior squad at Headingley. Whether he plays or not, Lewis is relishing the chance to rub shoulders with some of the best players in the country.

“I’m looking forward to the experience to make myself a better person and player,” he told the Mail.

“To be around England players is surreal really. I’m going there to be myself. I’ll look at what the other players in my position are doing to get where I need to get to and make that senior squad.

“I’m not in a rush; I’ve got a good 15 years ahead of me yet. But the earlier I do it the better it’ll be for myself, just to make me a better person in general.”

Knights squad: Matty Ashton, Jack Broadbent, Lewis Dodd, Levi Edwards, Matty English, Morgan Gannon, Sam Halsall, Tom Holroyd, George Lawler, Matty Lees, Mikey Lewis, Ellis Longstaff, James Mcdonnell, Liam Marshall, Kai Pearce-paul, Will Pryce, Aaron Smith, Danny Walker, Oliver Wilson, Connor Wrench.
