A Hot-headed thug with a long history of violence savagely broke a man’s jaw in two places after getting involved when he saw the victim arguing with his girlfriend.

Joshua Challis, 30, angrily demanded to know what was going on and shouted: “I’m going to sort him out.”

He was a “man of violence” and even previous prison sentences had not put him off drink-fuelled aggression, Hull Crown Court heard.

Challis, of Princes Avenue, Hedon, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on July 10.

Julia Baggs, prosecuting, said that the man was out walking with his girlfriend in the Bude Park area, Bude Road, Hull, when they had an argument.

Challis appeared from a cut-through and aggressively asked: “What’s going on?”

He punched the victim on the jaw with a clenched fist, leaving his mouth pouring with blood.

He said, “I’m going to sort him out” before the woman intervened and told him to leave her boyfriend alone.

The victim’s right lower jaw was broken in two places and he was taken to hospital, where he needed surgery on July 11.

Challis was later arrested at 3am in Blisland Close, Hull.

He had convictions for 65 previous offences between 2006 and 2020, with 12 of violence.

They included causing grievous bodily harm with intent in 2007, another grievous bodily harm and others for assault causing actual bodily harm.

Stephen Robinson, mitigating, said that Challis had a bad record. “There was no weapon and it was one blow,” said Mr Robinson.

“There was an argument between the complainant and his partner. He went over to see if she was OK.

“After that, he completely lost his temper. Drink has been his problem. There were problems with his temper but this is exacerbated when he is in drink.

“He went out, had a drink and fell back into his old ways.

“He is sorry for getting involved in this. He knows

Most people learn from experience but, sadly, you appear to be unable or unwilling to do so. You are a man of violence Judge David Tremberg

that he has to sort himself out.”

Challis had been working at a laminate factory serving food in a canteen.

Judge David Tremberg told Challis: “Most people learn from experience but, sadly, you appear to be unable or unwilling to do so. You are a man of violence.

“You have committed offences of violence to the person, some of them serious, over the course of many years against a background of alcohol abuse and temper control issues.

“All too often, you resort to sorting things out with violence.”

Even previous prison sentences had not deterred Challis.

“It’s about time you took responsibility for your own actions, otherwise prison will simply be a revolving door and the sentences will get longer and longer,” said Judge Tremberg.

Challis was jailed for 18 months.
