RESIDENTS in a Hull care home previously placed in special measures are are still “at risk of unsafe care and support”, a latest inspection has found.

Pearson Park Care Home was placed into special measures after it received an “inadequate requires improvement” rating on September 1, following an inspection in June by the Care Quality Commission, where inspectors discovered a faeces-stained bed.

Following further inspection on September 8, inspectors were still not happy with what they saw.

The care home watchdog said: “The purpose of this inspection was to check a specific concern we had about the safety of the premises and the risk of abuse and avoidable harm.

“Some people remained at risk of unsafe care and support.

“The provider had not referred one person for a professional assessment of their moving and handling needs to ensure they received safe care and support.”

Two safety-related incidents were found to have not been thoroughly investigated and only limited action taken to prevent it happening again.

One person’s care plan was also not updated after a fall.

Pearson Park Care Home investigated both incidents after the inspection and committed to updating their documentation to better support such investigations, the report states.

Improvements were noted in other areas by the inspectors, including the cleanliness of the premises and guidance to staff on managing the risks of people developing pressure ulcers.

The full inspection in June was prompted by specific safeguarding concerns the CQC had received about the care home.

Back then, inspectors found safety-related incidents had not been investigated to prevent them happening again, a person’s bedrails had corroded, one faux leather chair had disintegrated after being saturated with urine and one person’s bed had faeces marks.

Pearson Park Care Home was found to be in breach of six health and social care regulations, including “safe care and treatment” and “safeguarding service users from abuse and improper treatment”.

“Not all staff treated people with dignity and respect and people had not been involved in writing their care plans,” added the CQC inspection report.

The care home was also found back in June to have failed to protect people from degrading care.

This included no curtain or blind to cover a large window in the communal bathroom on the ground floor.

A cupboard which stored people’s records was also found to be “routinely open” and the inspectors witnessed a newly employed cleaner look through a person’s care plan.

An action plan from the care home on how they would improve the safety and quality of care was requested afterwards.

By the time of the targeted inspection in September, faulty equipment had been replaced and access restricted to areas undergoing refurbishment.

“We were assured that the provider was preventing visitors from catching and spreading infections,” said the CQC inspectors in the more recent report, published on October 4.

Pearson Park Care Home, which was approached by Hull Live for a comment, will be reinspected within the next six months.
