MALLIK IS BACKED TO FIND HIS FEET

MCCANN FEELS STRIKER WILL REGAIN HIS TOP CITY FORM

GRANT Mccann believes Mallik Wilks will improve as the season wears on and has backed last season’s top scorer to find his feet at Championship level.

Wilks has just one goal to his name so far this season which came in the 2-0 home win over Middlesbrough just before the international break, and it was hoped the 22-year-old would kick on from there.

At Huddersfield on Saturday, Wilks looked well below par throughout and missed two glorious chances to get City on the scoresheet in what eventually turned out to be a 2-0 defeat.

Mccann, however, remains confident Wilks will continue to improve having missed part of pre-season and then the early weeks of the campaign after picking up an injury late on in the win at Preston the opening day.

“We’re confident, he’s getting better for sure. He’s missed a huge chunk of the first few games,” said Mccann.

“He looked a bit better again (at Huddersfield) in terms of where he’s been at, he had a couple of very good chances.

“One from a mistake from the centre half when he should shoot earlier for sure and the second one he should score, Mallik will know that himself. We’ve just got to keep getting him fitter and fitter.”

City again passed up good opportunities on Saturday, and will need to bounce back when they host fellow strugglers Peterborough

United tonight. And while Mccann’s strikers have so far failed to hit their straps this term, he says the onus is on other players in the side to make the most of the openings they are presented with as they look to add to their eight goals this term.

“We’ve got to take those chances in this division,” he said. “We said this in the changing room, it’s not just the forwards because they’ll feel as if we’re piling onto them, and it’s us as a team.

“There’s different people in those areas where the ball goes in, the ball is dropping to midfield players on the edge of the box and we’re just not clinical enough, they’ve got to have belief in themselves.”
