AN almost 200-year-old Hornsea barn could be converted into a holiday rental if a planning application is approved.

Plans lodged with East Riding Council propose converting the barn, in Weatherhill Farm, Southorpe Road, into lodgings for holidaymakers.

Its location would put tourists close to Tophill Low Nature Reserve to the west, Burshill to the north and Brandesburton to the east.

Surveys on the building found it remained in a good condition but recommended minor structural upgrades as part of the conversion before it goes up for rent.

Developers’ documents stated the barn was built in 1825 to house animals and was attached to a cart shed.

Its features are largely original, with wear and tear found during the structural survey typical of buildings of its age.

Plans for the conversion include adding two parking spaces to the site, as well as putting up a rail fence around its boundary.

The barn is around eight miles away from Hornsea, meaning guests could drive to the town and its beach in about 15 minutes.

Beverley is about a 20-minute drive away at nine miles while holidaymakers would be able to reach Driffield, roughly 12 miles north, in around 25 minutes.

Its location near Brandesburton also puts it close to Hainsworth Park Golf Club, Dacre Lakeside Park and Star Carr Lakes with Hornsea Garden Centre lying further east.

The hamlets and villages of Leven, Burshill and Hempholme are also close by, as is the River Hull to the west.

A report on the structural survey of the barn has recommended repointng the eroded mortar in its joints and reinforcing its roof.

The report stated: “The building is in excellent condition when compared to most agricultural buildings of this type proposed for conversion.

“It is clear the buildings have originally been planned, built and subsequently maintained to a good standard.

“Recent refurbishment work was noted, in preparation for the forthcoming conversion.

“The programme of minor structural upgrade should be included within the proposed conversion work.”
