Hessle clinch Alliance win

MOORE AND MARSHALL SPREADEAGLE THE FIELD AT HULL

- JOHN NICHOLSON reports from the greens of East Yorkshire

PLAYING in the last match out on the course was no impediment to Hessle’s Matt Moore (3) and Peter Marshall (10) as they shot a superb eight-under-par 62 in Round Two of this season’s East Riding Alliance at Hull Golf Club.

With play nearing its conclusion it appeared that five under par would be the best of the day with four pairs tied on this mark but Moore and Marshall had other ideas.

Having progressed to the turn in three under par with three handicap Moore being the main provider, scoring on eight holes, Marshall then really got into his stride with a superb eagle two on the 278yard par-four 10th.

A nicely placed rescue wood to the centre of the fairway left him with a 60-yard pitch which benefitting from a favourable bounce off a downslope at the front of the green ran straight and true into the cup.

Using his shot allowance to maximum effect the ten handicapper then contributed three nett birdies on the run for home and with Moore using one of his meagre shot allowance to add a nett birdie on the 15th the pair even had the luxury of a dropped shot on the par-five 12th.

Home in just 30 strokes, the pair had spread-eagled the field of 160 players.

The downside for Hessle was that the Moore/marshall partnership were not a counting team for the purposes of the Challenge Bowl, had they been the Raywell club would have risen to second place in the standings.

Leaders after the Hull alliance are Scarborough North Cliff three shots clear of Hull with Selby and Filey bracketed together in third a further four shots back.

Round One leaders Ganton had a bad day, dropping back to 10th place whilst holders Pike Hills lie sixth.
