ALEX DITCHED HER ‘BORING’ JOB TO BECOME THE CITY’S BEST WINDOW PAINTER

A HULL woman ditched her “boring” business job in a big city to return to Hull and brighten the place up.

Alex Hunt, who lives in the city centre, has been creating epic window designs at some of the city’s most beloved businesses, but it didn’t start out that easy.

The 24-year-old has created window designs for the popular Nibble in Victoria Dock, Superdrug in St Stephen’s, Paper in Paragon Arcade, 38 North Bar Within in Beverley, and a number of spots in Humber Street and Whitefriargate - to name a few.

Not only have residents noticed her designs, but BBC presenter Peter Levy was pictured posing outside her butterfly window creation, part of Hull’s Absolutely Cultured.

Although the former Hull College student is now getting the recognition she deserves for her work, it didn’t start out so easy.

Alex, who went to Withernsea High School, has always had her hand on a paint brush, but was sceptical about how successful she could be in the field of art.

“Art was always my thing”, she said, and she went on to study the subject at college before moving to Manchester to take on a graphic design course.

Alex, whose brand name is Tits n Bits, thought this would be the best way to incorporate her love of creativity with better job prospects at the end of it. Degree complete, Alex landed a job as a graphic design intern at a firm. Alex said: “I was just so pleased to get a job out of university that I really wanted to stick it out, but I remember sitting there thinking, ‘this cannot be my life.’ “It was a really good job, but the company watered down my work and I just got to the point where I thought this is not for me.” She quit the role during the pandemic and moved back to Hull hoping to pursue her own art.

She said: “I love making jewellery so I started doing that for a bit of income and made my brand ‘Tits n Bits.’ I started selling my earrings down Humber Street and saw that the flower shop down there was looking for a window design.

“I took a picture of the outside of the shop and started drawing and then sent them a design and they loved it. Everyone kept noticing the window and it has propelled from there.”

Alex has confessed that while the glossy business and big city life was what she thought she wanted, she is now so glad to be creating such amazing art in her home town.

She said: “I came back to Hull and thought ‘wow it has got really cool here.’ Coming back has made me feel alive. When I was sat in the office every day I was constantly tired. Now when I am window painting I am just full of energy.

“There have been so many more opportunities in Hull and I am so glad I went for it, tried it, and it has been rewarding.”
