HULL KR have completed an important piece of business by tying down Mikey Lewis to an improved fouryear deal that will keep him at Craven Park until at least the end of 2025.

The homegrown half-back was already contracted to the club for the next two years but he has been rewarded for a breakthrough campaign that saw him light up Super League.

Lewis scored eight tries in 13 appearances in all in 2021, the highlight a scintillating solo effort in the play-off victory over Warrington Wolves.

The 20-year-old ended a hugely encouraging season in England colours, starring for the Knights in their demolition of Jamaica last month.

Lewis showed impressive character along the way after being sent out on loan to York City Knights to work on the defensive side of his game.

It proved to be a productive spell at the Championship club with Lewis enjoying a memorable outing at Wembley in the 1895 Cup final, marking the occasion with a try.

After returning to star for the Robins in their run to the semi-finals of the play-offs, Lewis is excited about his future at Craven Park.

“I’m over the moon,” he said.

“It was an easy decision for myself. It didn’t take me long to sign the contract.

“It was a rollercoaster alright (2021). To play at one of the greatest stadiums in the world (Wembley) was a fantastic feeling and then going 80 minutes close to a Grand Final was a great achievement.

“It’s been a rollercoaster but Tony (Smith) has kept me level-headed every step of the way to make sure I’m doing my job to the best I could.

“I’m very excited for 2022. We’ve seen a few glimpses of what we can do as a team. “With the recruitment we’ve done, the team we’ve got and the injured boys coming back like Elliot (Minchella), it’s very exciting. We think we can go that one step further this year and it starts with this pre-season.”

The news means all three KR halfbacks have signed new deals this year, with Jordan Abdull committed until 2024 and Rowan Milnes contracted through to 2025.

Smith, who handed Lewis his Super League debut in August 2019, is backing the starlet to go from strength to strength after extending his stay with the Robins.

“It’s terrific news for both Mikey and the club,” said Smith.

“He’s really stepped up another level. He’s got a few more to come and he’ll certainly achieve those levels, I’m sure of it.

“He sets his sights pretty high, which is great. He’s certainly made some big advancements this year.

“He’s earned it, he deserves it and he’s going to continue to improve.”
