Plan for closures on A63

OVERNIGHT ROADWORKS

- By GREGORY FORD gregory.ford@reachplc.com @Fordwrit

DRIVERS are being warned to plan journeys in advance in the coming weeks as a series of overnight closures are expected on both carriageways of the A63 until January.

National Highways is carrying out improvements along the stretch of road, which it says will improve safety for drivers.

Work on the maintenance scheme involves resurfacing the carriageway and slip roads between the Welton Interchange (Water Lane/cowgate) and Western Interchange (Humber Bridge A15, east of Hessle).

National Highways confirmed that the work will take place overnight during this week, Monday to Friday from 8pm to 6am, with the closure of one carriageway at a time.

The scheme started yesterday on the eastbound carriageway and will also involve drainage and electrical work, with this section set to be completed on Tuesday, December 7.

Work on the westbound carriageway will start on Monday, January 10, with the aim to finish by Thursday, January 20.

There is one weekend closure overnight on Saturday, January 22, to complete the electrical work on the eastbound carriageway.

The work follows other A63 improvements taking place nearby including safety barrier replacement between North Cave to South Cave and several enhancements at the Welton Interchange.

National Highways project manager Steve Bishop said: “All the work which is taking place along the A63 in the East Riding is important and necessary maintenance for this key road which is used by tens of thousands of drivers every day.

“We appreciate this latest scheme is more work along this route and will have some impact on drivers and residents, but we have planned as best we can for all the work to run concurrently, and where possible share traffic management to minimise disruption.”

To carry out the work, overnight closures will be needed as National Highways carries out maintenance schemes along the A63, with all set to be completed early next year.

These works will be paused over the festive period where there will be no planned overnight closures.

Fully signed diversions will be in place, which have been agreed in advance with the police and local council. The A63 diversion routes will add approximately 20 miles to journeys so allow time for travelling.
