A NEW petrol station and convenience store has opened in Beverley.

Little over a year after it was closed by The Co-op, Waterside Filling Station opened this week, having been bought by Jos Richardson & Son Ltd. A total of ten jobs are being created.

The fifth generation family business, founded in Goole, is now headquartered just outside neighbouring Howden. It operates ten service stations and convenience stores across the county, as well as a truckstop facility.

Managing director, Joseph Richardson, said: “We’re delighted to have bought the freehold property at Waterside Filling Station, Beverley. This is an exciting opportunity for us, which we are predominantly viewing as a convenience store offering fuel.

“The store achieved good sales before it was closed and we hope to get back to that level and beyond. For the last few months, we’ve been working with our suppliers to get the site up and running, and we’re delighted to have welcomed our new Beverley-based team to the Jos Richardson & Son family.”

A comprehensive refit has been undertaken prior to the reopening on Wednesday, May 4. Long-term brand partners Jet, for fuel, and Spar, for groceries, have been brought on board.

Waterside Filling Station features two fuel islands, with four fill positions, with a retail area within a 4,000 sq ft building of 2,500 sq ft. It sits off the junction of the B1230 Hull Road / Beckside, Waterside Road and Figham Road.

It is the first service station where the company has installed self-service checkouts for both fuel and shop-bought goods. A Costa Express and Daily Deli counter will feature, with food-to-go, off licence and other amenities.

It is the third site addition in six months for the company. Mr Richardson said: “Coming so soon after the purchase of our first straight convenience store at Gilberdyke and the property investment at Haxby near York, it has been a busy few months but we’re excited about the huge potential these new sites bring to our growing and evolving business.”

Founded in 1892, the business was originally a coal merchants, later diversifying into car dealerships and fuel stations in the 1970s and 1980s.
