Why Brodie Croft would be a good signing for Hull

-

THE recruitment window is open. Hull fans will be keen to know who the club will be signing but I don’t see FC doing a lot of business.

If I were in charge I’d be looking to bring the average age of the spine down.

Luke Gale, Josh Reynolds and Danny Houghton are all 33 and they now need some younger talent in there to provide some continuity for years to come.

Obviously, the question is who. I don’t know if Salford halfback Brodie Croft would be available but if they could go and get him out of the Red Devils, I would go and get him.

He looks like a real player and at 24 has his best years ahead of him. At Salford he’s played at a consistent level and bringing him in would be a way of reducing that average age.

It feels like FC have been linked with Jake Trueman for months and if that’s the direction they go down, he is one you can persevere with. My concern is his potential is starting to run out. He’s still only 23 but has he really improved like many of us would have hoped for? I’m not sure.

When you’ve got that potential label you become bulletproof but eventually, you get pelters and I think he has got a little bit of that as of late.

But he is one you could persevere with.

Other than that, I think Hull FC are in a good spot.

Look at St Helens with their signing of Joey Lussick. They brought him in when James Roby still had a year to run, but they’ve done it early to integrate him and to plan for the long-term.

They gave the young lad, Aaron Smith, some time, but clearly they don’t think that’s going to work out so they’ve moved early and been proactive.

FC need to do that with their next halfback recruit.

As I said, I don’t think many more changes are needed.

We’ve always said FC have a rubbish result in them but they’re fourth and doing well. The pack is playing really well, Jack Brown and Brad Fash have been great, Scott Taylor looks heavy but is punching the line, Kane Evans is getting better.

Then you have Ligi Sao and Manu Ma’u. I’d be giving Ma’u another year unless there’s a long-term plan. His stats don’t lie. He is getting the occasional injury, but you know what you get from him and that’s good performances.
