City’s Ingram hails Luton boss for stunning season

-

GOALKEEPER Matt Ingram has revealed why he believes Luton Town have enjoyed such a remarkable season in the Championship, and one which could yet see them earn a firstever promotion to the Premier League later this month.

Ingram is on loan at the Bedfordshire club after boss Nathan Jones made a desperate plea to the EFL to allow them to sign an emergency goalkeeper after their two first-choice glovemen picked up serious injuries.

The City stopper has since played twice for the Hatters and will start tonight in the first-leg of their play-off semifinal against Huddersfield

Town at Kenilworth Road, having settled in well.

With the league’s lowest budget, Jones has worked miracles at Kenilworth Road and after guiding his side to a sixth-place finish in the Championship, the Welshman was named the league’s manager of the season, and Ingram, who saw his emergency loan move extended by a further week on Wednesday, believes it’s because of how simple Jones makes life for his players.

“I’d say it’s been fairly easy,” Ingram said. “The gaffer makes the gameplan very straightforward, it’s just different scenarios that could happen, ways to resolve it, and to be honest, I think it’s been fairly easy getting to grips with that. He makes it so clear and obvious as to what we do, what he likes, and what he doesn’t like, so I feel very comfortable coming in.

“It’s a credit to the lads and the gaffer’s gameplan because it just shows that, no matter who’s behind the team, they’re capable of keeping clean sheets.”

Ingram says settling in has not been a challenge, despite moving to the club 44 games into the campaign and with crucial fixtures to come, which could see the club playing in the top flight next term.

“I played with Reece Burke at Hull, I played with Fred Onyedinma at Wycombe so those two I knew quite well,” he said. “I’ve played against most of the players up and down the league throughout the years,” he said.

“It’s a great dressing room and a really nice one to come into. They are a great group and they made me feel welcome straight away.

“I think that is a large part of them getting to where they are because they are a fantastic group.

“They fight for each other, there are no bad eggs and it has been a massive part of their success this season.”
