Smith: We’re not where we need to be at the moment

HEAD coach Tony Smith admitted Hull KR are not currently where they need to be as a club, but is ready to bring some fresh bodies back into the side.

Missing some influential players, including half-backs Jordan Abdull and Mikey Lewis, the experienced Kane Linnett and vice-captain Elliot Minchella, Rovers were thrashed 32-0 at Castleford Tigers.

Smith, though, made no excuses for his depleted team’s display.

“We need to get back to playing our confident style of rugby league,” said Smith.

“At the moment, we just aren’t where we need to be as a club. There were some moments today that I saw as fifty fifty scenarios, and when things aren’t going well, they bounce the other way. We’ve had the luck of situations like that, so we know how beneficial it can be.

“Castleford have had a week to re-energize and freshen up to fix up their defence. We haven’t had that luxury. But that’s by our own doing, we would rather be playing in semi-finals absolutely, but we need to get back to working hard for each other and playing with more confidence.”

Rovers were presented with some more injury woe as Dean Hadley and Brad Takairangi left the field early during Sunday’s defeat.

Smith, though, revealed several key players will be back for Saturday’s home tie against Catalans Dragons.

“Takairangi has done his hamstring, and it’s a significant tear,” he said.

“We lost Deano (Hadley) early on, which had a big impact on our bench, that’s what happens when things are going against you, it’s very similar to our first three games of the season, but we worked through it and got back on track by building momentum.

“Elliot Minchella and Albert Vete will be back next week.

“Dagz (Dagger) will be probably playing halfback, his knee needed resting today, but he’s back in for Catalans.

“Frankie Halton has been sorely missed since the derby.

“His absence has given some extra workload to some of the guys that look fatigued at the moment. He’s been one of our solid performers and will add some fresh legs.”
