‘ESSENTIAL’ WORKS WILL DISRUPT TRAFFIC

A BUSY road that links central Hull to the A63 will be closed in both directions for four weeks, Hull City Council announced yesterday.

Great Union Street will be shut for “essential highway resurfacing”, with work due to begin on Monday.

The news promises to bring yet more delays for commuters, following the closure of another key link road - Calvert Lane, in west Hull, which is not expected to reopen until July.

Hull City Council apologised for “any inconvenience” and said the closure was “vital” to ensure the road remained safe for vehicles.

It follows eight weeks of roadworks in Great Union

Street in the summer of 2020.

During the works, Great Union Street, in east Hull, will be closed to traffic in both directions between Clarence Street and the A63 Roger Millward Way, the council said.

A diversion will reroute motorists via Clarence Street, Holderness Road, Mount Pleasant and the A63.

Access will be retained for businesses in Tower Street, Citadel Way and St Peter Street.

In the first phase of the works (Clarence Street to Citadel Way), access to Citadel Way and St Peter Street will be via the A63.

In the second phase (Citadel Way to A63), access with be via Clarence Street.

However, the council said the access might be unavailable for short periods, such as “during initial planing and final surfacing of the carriageway”.

Pedestrian access would not be affected, the council added.

Bin collections will continue as normal and notices will be placed at bus stops explaining how bus services will be affected.

Ian Cappleman, who leads the council’s Major Projects and Infrastructure team, said: “This vitalwork will ensure the highway continues to provide a safe and even surface for traffic.

“While we envisage the works will be completed within four weeks, circumstances outside of our control, such as weather conditions and plant breakdown, could have an impact on the timescale.

“We will do all we can to ensure resident access is maintained. However, there may be times when access is prohibited for short periods of time. We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause and thank residents and motorists for their patience.”

The news comes as the council is encouraging people to have their say on the future of the transport network in Hull.

CR Reynolds Ltd will be carrying out the Great Union Street work on behalf of Hull City Council.
