Ukrainian chef set to host fundraiser with food and music
CHARITY EVENT FEATURES UKRAINIAN FOOD
HULL-BASED Ukrainian chef Lena Sutherland is hosting a fundraising buffet featuring traditional dishes and songs from her war-torn home country for charities working on the frontline.
Lena sold her well-known deli business, in Hull city centre, in April last year after 22 years and was hoping to concentrate on a new home delivery venture.
Instead, first the pandemic and now the war intervened.
Now, having already organised one fundraising dinner, she’s preparing for an even bigger event this coming Saturday when she plans to serve up a traditional buffet-style dinner at the Jubilee Central Hall in King Edward Street in the city centre.
A full menu of 18 different Ukrainian dishes will be available to try, with around half being vegetarian or vegan.
She said: “People can enjoy a taste of Ukrainian food as well as a taste of our language, art and culture and learn about the people who make it.
“We will be introducing four internationally famous Ukrainian artists and members of the local Ukrainian community will be performing a well-known protest song with audience participation being encouraged!”
Saturday’s event starts at 1pm with tickets priced at £25 per person and free entry for children up to the age of 12. Proceeds will go a number of Ukraine-based charities.
Earlier this year, Lena spoke of her fears for her country following the Russian invasion.
She said: “There will also be an opportunity to buy Ukrainian souvenirs, gifts and postcards and we will be giving an update on where the money we raise is going, who it is helping and the latest news from the frontline.
“It will also be an opportunity for people to get to know each other and have a chat.”
To book a table call either 07843790471 or 07515931163 between 6pm and 8pm. People are also being encouraged to bring their own drinks.
