Wood signs new KR deal as recruitment drive ramps up for next season
THE OUTSIDE-BACK HAS PENNED A ONE-YEAR DEAL
HULL KR have confirmed that Sam Wood has extended his contract at the club.
When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s clash against Catalans Dragons, coach Tony Smith was full of praise for Sam Wood and his development at the club, but was quick to shut down that he has any impact or knowledge on the recruitment drive ahead of 2023.
“I have no idea about contract negotiations for 2023,” Smith said.
“Sam has impressed me with all sorts. His willingness to learn and comprehensive professional approach to the game really impresses me.
“He wants to get out there and will play any position for the team,” Smith continued. “He’s got a real bright future as a versatile player, and his former coach Ian Watson told me he’d tipped Sammy to be a valuable player, which he has done already.”
After finding his feet in the starting lineup after a torrid debut against Wigan Warriors, Wood dislocated his patella during the 12-0 defeat to Leeds Rhinos earlier in the month.
However, he is likely to return to action against Salford Red Devils in two weeks’ time after missing the last few games and will be raring to go after securing his future at the club.
Now Wood has extended his stay in East Hull, Rovers have now announced the retention of four players ahead of 2023, with Elliot Minchella, Kane Linnett and Matt Parcell all signing new deals at Craven Park. However, new coach Willie Peters still has plenty of work to do in building his side for next year, as Rovers have 11 current players off contract at the end of 2022.
