HEALTH officials in Yorkshire have confirmed “several” cases of monkeypox in the region in recent days, it’s been announced.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says a small number of cases have been detected, and is advising people to look out for the signs and symptoms. It brings the total in England so far up to May 23 as 56.

While the outbreak has been described by the Government as “significant and concerning”, health experts have stressed that the risk to the general population remains low. The virus does not spread easily, but can be passed on through close contact or touching items used by someone with the illness.

Dr Will Welfare, a health protection consultant for the UKHSA, said: “We have detected several cases of monkeypox in England over recent days. These cases, along with identification of others across Europe, confirms our initial concerns that there could be the spread of monkeypox within England.

“Of the cases found, many of them are among men who have had sex with men, including gay and bisexual men. Because the virus spreads through close contact we are urging everyone, but especially those who are gay, bisexual, or men who have had sex with men, to be aware of any unusual rashes or lesions and to contact a sexual health service if they have any concerns.

“It is important you phone ahead before attending.”

He added: “Monkeypox usually causes a mild illness and most

people recover within a few weeks, however it can be serious in some cases, so it’s important we contain any spread as much as possible.

“We are already contacting any potential close contacts of the identified cases, to provide health information advice.

“The risk to the general public is low, but if you suspect you may have any monkeypox symptoms, particularly blister-like lesions or rashes, try to limit your contact with others and get in touch with your local sexual health service as soon as possible.”

The UKHSA says it has purchased doses of the smallpox vaccine (Imvanex) which is being offered to close contacts of confirmed monkeypox cases to reduce the risk of infection.
