Tom, 17, determined to make good memories in months he has left

A HULL teenager and dad-to-be has been told he only has months left to live.

Tom Belcher, 17, first started experiencing symptoms in early November last year and developed a squint in his left eye. A few weeks later, he started to lose his balance and by the middle of December, he received the news he had a brain tumour, with plans to start his radiotherapy on New Year’s Eve.

His family describe Tom as “a cheeky wind-up merchant who loves making people laugh and smile” and he is a soon-to-be father, with a baby boy due in September with his partner, Ellie Burnett.

Despite the devastation of his family and friends, Tom has told them to “live life and don’t be sad” and is determined to live life to the fullest while he is still here.

Tom told his friends and family: “Knowing that I have six to 12 months to live is so scary, but I just carry on living my best life and make good memories in the time I have left.

“I can’t sit here overthinking it all, but the scariest thing is what happens when you die because no one knows? I hope it’s good though.

“I’m gonna miss all the boys and my family. I love you all and hope you all do good in life. Also, thanks Ellie, thank you for helping me with everything you have done.

“I couldn’t appreciate you enough. We’ve had our ups and downs but wouldn’t change it for anything, love you.”

Tom’s family had already gone through a devastating loss, when Tom’s dad, Chris Belcher, passed away in October 2020. His immediate family now consists of his mum, Clare Briggs, and his two older brothers, George and Nathan.

Tom’s aunty, Debbie Briggs, said: “As a family we are all heartbroken and devastated but continue the way Tom wants us to ... Live life and don’t be sad. When Tom was diagnosed and given the news it was terminal, his attitude was ‘it is what it is’ and wants to live life to the fullest as much as he can.”

The 17-year-old finished school last year and started a job at Victory Caravans.

Debbie said: “He was really enjoying it up until his diagnosis meant he had to leave work.”

Tom has tried to continue with his hobbies as much as possible and despite his diagnosis, still tries to go fishing. He also loves to go out for meals, with his favourite being a good carvery at Wingfield.

He has a lot of close friends from school and they have started a fundraiser in his honour.

They said: “When Tom should be starting his life, he is concentrating on making memories with the limited time he has left.

“Tom has been a great friend to so many and we want to help him ensure that his last part of his life is filled with laughter, fun and great times.

“Being the caring and thoughtful one, Tom wants to pay for his own send-off. As his mates, we can’t allow that. He shouldn’t have any kind of stress or anxiety during this time. This is why we have set up The Belcher Fundraiser.

“We would like to raise enough money to give Belcher the send-off he deserves. If we are fortunate to raise more than required, the funds will be used to ensure Tom creates the best memories with those he loves the most.”

The lads are doing a series of fundraising events to support the cause, such as sponsored bike rides, 100 squares and charity games. You can support their fundraiser at www. gofundme.com/f/the-belcher-fundraiser
