Lorry overturns and smashes into wall off the A63
STRETCH OF ROAD CLOSED FOR SIX HOURS TO RECOVER CRASHED TRUCK
A STRETCH of the A63 in Hull was closed for more than six hours yesterday after a lorry overturned and smashed into a brick wall.
The accident happened on the westbound carriageway close to the Fruit Market. Emergency services diverted traffic as they worked to recover the lorry and clean up a fuel spill.
A large hole could be seen in the brick wall, which borders the Fruit Market and a residential area, where the lorry turned on to its side following the crash at about 8.45am.
Motorists were warned of delays in the surrounding area, with congestion stretching back to Mount Pleasant in east Hull and the Freetown Way junction to the west.
Recovery of the stricken lorry began at 11am, when a tow truck could be seen lifting the vehicle away.
However, the road did not reopen until 3pm due to an extensive clean-up operation and safety work. One lane of the A63 remained closed yesterday evening due to damage to a safety barrier.
This evening, the National Highways Agency said the damage had been made safe but warned drivers of potential delays due to the continuing lane closure.
“The extensive barrier damage has been made safe and the overturned truck has been recovered,” the agency said.
“Contractors have cleared the debris and reopened the road. Please allow extra time for your journey as residual delays remain.”
The lorry, which had a German number plate and advertised a German brand of kitchens, could be seen slewed across the carriageway and pavement.
It was not immediately clear how the crash happened or whether the driver had suffered any injuries.
Writing on social media following the crash yesterday morning, Humberside Police said: “Drivers in Hull, please be aware that the A63’s westbound carriageway is temporarily closed between the Victoria Dock roundabout and the Castle Street junction following a road traffic collision.
“The road is likely closed until at least the early afternoon. Thank you.”
