Hull FC’S reserves lost 26-22 on Friday night as Wakefield Trinity scored two late tries to snatch the spoils at Belle Vue. Alex Gibson and Marcus Walker touched down for the Black and Whites in the first half and Manoa Wacokecoke and Cam Scott got over in the second, but it wasn’t enough to see off a strong home side.

Head coach Brett Hodgson was in attendance and he will have been pleased with a number of performers against Trinity. Here’s a look at a few players who caught our eye.

PLAYERS

Josh Bowden

The prop will have been keen to impress at Belle Vue after struggling for game time in the first team this year and he did exactly that, turning in a huge shift.

Bowden’s superior size and strength was evident from the off and he showed no hesitation in throwing his weight around.

He got over the advantage line with every carry and produced a couple of fine offloads to get Hull moving up the field in the first half.

He’s down the pecking order at the MKM, but he did himself no harm in West Yorkshire with a powerful performance, leading the way for Hull’s young middles. He wasn’t the only first-teamer involved, with Jordan Johnstone and Cam Scott playing, too, but he was probably the most impressive.

Matty Laidlaw

The young prop is getting plenty of people excited at FC and it’s not hard to see why. Laidlaw turned in an impressive showing through the middle, making his presence felt with his fearless running game.

He’s still only 18, but he more than handled Wakefield’s big men defensively and hurt them with the ball in hand as he consistently made metres after contact.

The former Hull Dockers junior has trained on a few occasions with the Black and Whites’ first team lately and he’ll be keen to make that a regular occurrence in the coming months.

Zach Jebson

Jebson appeared for the Black and Whites’ first-team over preseason after spending the winter months training with Hodgson’s senior squad and the head coach will have been pleased with the back-rower’s efforts against Wakefield.

He constantly showed for the ball and managed to rack up the metres as he carried well out of yardage and popped up in good ball, too. He was also part of a resolute left edge, alongside Walker and Lewis Martin.

Cam Scott

Scott enjoyed a solid return to action against Trinity after overcoming the syndesmosis injury that has ruled him out for the last three months. The centre got stuck in early and handled himself well as he took on opposite number Bill Tupou.

He carried well out of yardage and got a try in the second half, slipping through a gap and powering away from defenders to touch down under the sticks and give Hull a commanding lead going into the final 10 minutes.

Ultimately, they couldn’t hold onto that lead, but Scott will have been pleased with his efforts after so long on the sidelines.
