SEVENTY of Hull’s doctors, nurses, and other NHS staff are swapping scrubs for trainers and taking part in the 2022 Hull Half Marathon and Hull 10K.

Along with friends and business supporters, the determined team of runners includes staff from endoscopy, maxillofacial, anaesthetic care, neurosurgery, cardiology, ophthalmology, physiotherapy, radiotherapy, breast care, paediatrics, and administration across the Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hosruns pital sites. WISHH, the official Hull Hospitals charity, is aiming to raise £50,000 to improve family accommodation for children and babies cared for at Hull Royal Infirmary.

The project includes expanding the number of family rooms for parents and carers of the area’s sickest babies and children who are being cared for at the hospital. The hospital runners have been in training ahead of the races, which both take place on Sunday, June 12.

Andreea Tudor, an NHS nurse, said: “I have been running on and off for five years. Being in the middle of the pandemic, isolated and away from family and friends, running gave me the strength, clarity, and energy to push through and be a better nurse. I ended up running every day for 400 days.

“I want to support By Your Side Appeal, because every child, especially the most vulnerable of them,

shouldn’t be alone. They need the strength from their family, they need the bond with their parents to stay strong, and at the same time parents need support, and a safe space where they can rest, recharge and be stronger for their children.”

Project officer Daniel Little said: “My running began when I lost my grandad to cancer and I wanted to do something out of my comfort zone and support charities. I have taken part in seven Great North

and numerous 10k races, loving the camaraderie and support you get from taking part in an organised race.

“Following the pandemic, it’s great to start running again and return to an organised event and support the By Your side Appeal.”

Local businesses backing the effort include Home Bargains, Drewery Electrical and Helix.
