BEACONS LIT FOR JUBILEE

- By PAUL JOHNSON paul.johnson@reachplc.com

MORE than 3,000 beacons will be lit up and down Britain to mark the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s reign, including nearly 30 in Hull and East Yorkshire.

The Queen’s Jubilee beacons follow similar events in 1977, 2002 and 2012 for the silver, golden and diamond jubilees.

In Hull and East Yorkshire, the lighting of beacons will coincide with a programme of events to mark the Queens’ Platinum Jubilee.

A Humber Flotilla of around 70 ships will sail from Hull Marina to the Humber Bridge and two Spitfires will conduct a fly-past.

The beacons will be set ablaze today, with events taking place between 9.15pm-10pm. It is expected most beacons will be lit at around 9.45pm.

Meanwhile, a bugler and piper will stand on the in the nose cone at The Deep as it is lit up in purple.

Around the world, the first beacons will be lit in Tonga and Samoa in the South Pacific, and the last one in Belize, in central America.

The principal beacon outside Buckingham Palace – a 21-metre tall Tree of Trees sculpture – will be illuminated by a senior member of the Royal family.
