What happened next to the stars who left City?

MIXED FORTUNES FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T STAY AT THE MKM STADIUM

- By WILLIAM JACKSON william.jackson@reachplc.com @Williamj93

Hull City have said goodbye to a host of players over the last 12 months. Jordy de Wijs turned his loan move to QPR permanent shortly after the club won promotion back to the Championship, while the likes of Reece Burke and George Long chose to pursue other options.

Martin Samuelsen found a new club, too, while Josh Magennis moved on in January. Here’s a look at how those players who have left the Tigers over the last year have fared since.

Jordy de Wijs

After penning a permanent deal with QPR, the Dutchman was in Mark Warburton’s starting line-up at the beginning of the season and made 12 appearances at centre-back.

However, he picked up a calf injury while playing against Nottingham Forest in October and he struggled to regain his spot when fit.

De Wijs was loaned to Fortuna Dusseldorf in the January transfer window and he impressed during his 10 outings in the German second tier before his campaign was ended by a fractured rib.

As it stands, De Wijs is due to return to Loftus Road over the summer to begin pre-season, but it seems Fortuna are keen to take him on a permanent deal.

Elliot Bonds

The Guyana international left the MKM Stadium without making a single first-team appearance in black and amber to join Cheltenham Town, fresh from their promotion to League One. Bonds struggled for game time, though, and he was loaned to National League North outfit Kidderminster Harriers for a couple of months, where he made seven appearances.

He got his chance with the Robins on Boxing Day, though, and he went on to play a key role as Cheltenham secured a mid-table finish.

Reece Burke

Burke has made 32 appearances for Luton Town since joining the Hatters on a free transfer last summer, helping them to finish sixth and claim a Championship play-off place.

That play-off campaign was ended by Huddersfield Town, but Burke can still be pleased with his first year at Kenilworth Road.

His most notable moment came in the FA

Cup as he scored a header inside the opening few minutes of a fifth round tie with Chelsea, but it wasn’t enough to secure a giantkilling.

Max Clark

The 26-year-old joined up with Fleetwood Town after his second spell with the Tigers came to an end, but he was unable to tie down a consistent spot within the side. He made just 10 outings in League One for the Lancashire club before he was allowed to join Rochdale.

Clark was a key man at Spotland under manager and former City defender Robbie Stockdale and after featuring 23 times, he is in discussions about a new deal at the club.

George Long

Long is still waiting for the chance to impress at Millwall having found himself rooted behind established number one Bartosz Bialkowski. He was given some game time in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, but he failed to make a league appearance this year.

He’ll be keen to make his mark during his second season at The Den.

Max Sheaf

It seems as though Sheaf has struggled for traction since being released by the Tigers last June. He signed a oneyear deal with National League North side

Gloucester City and played 19 times before being allowed to join Hungerford Town on loan in February.

His future is currently unclear as his contract with Gloucester looks set to expire.

Martin Samuelsen

The Norway international cut a frustrated figure at the MKM Stadium as he struggled for form and minutes under Grant Mccann and he eventually left to join up with his former club FK Haugesund in the Norwegian top flight.

He featured regularly last season, making 16 appearances and scoring twice, but he hasn’t been involved this year as the club battle at the foot of the division.

Jordan Flores

Flores spent less than six months with City before joining Northampton Town on loan. That deal was made permanent just a couple of months later as the Tigers cancelled his contract, but he couldn’t settle at Sixfields either.

He struggled for opportunities with the League Two club and he was given permission to return to Ireland in January to sign for Bohemians. The midfielder has made 17 appearances since for the League of Ireland club, scoring twice and taking the captain’s armband on several occasions.

Thomas Mayer

Mayer was another who struggled to catch the eye in black and amber and he was allowed to return home to Austria in August to take up a deal with second tier side SKU Amstetten.

Throughout the 2021-22 campaign he made 27 appearances for the club, netted two goals and claimed eight assists.

Josh Magennis

Magennis was the only City player to leave in the January transfer window and he won’t be regretting it after helping Wigan Athletic win promotion out of League One as champions.

The Northern Ireland international scored three goals for the Latics over the second half of the campaign and he’ll be aiming to kick on and help the club stay in the Championship next season.
