King: After our break we’re ready to kick on

HULL KR prop forward George King is ready to put the record straight this weekend as Rovers look to get back to winning ways after four straight defeats.

King has been one of Rovers’ standout players in 2022 and has quickly become a fans’ favourite at Craven Park since joining in 2020.

After playing big minutes in the forward pack, the former Warrington and Wakefield star needed the recent break to freshen up more than most.

“As most of the lads have already said, we needed that break,” said King, ahead of Sunday’s clash with Salford Red Devils.

“We have had some congested fixtures and big games that have taken their toll on us.

“The few days off gave us a chance to relax and switch off from rugby league, but we are now fresh and back into training to kick on with the second half of the year like we did last year.

“We just need to get our focus back and pick up a good performance against Salford.”

King reflected on the difficult past few weeks and understands Rovers need to get back to basics and concentrate on each week in hand rather than looking too far ahead.

He added: “The stage we are at currently, we just have to take each game as it comes, it’d be lovely to plan ahead, but we need to pick up points as we go along and not get carried away with anything.

“That’s the case in Super League, and each week is hard work and a new challenge.”

The Ireland international, who has been ever-present for the Robins this year, admitted he sees Sunday’s clash with the Red Devils as a must-win game as Rovers look to end their four-game losing streak.

“Coming up against Salford this weekend will be tough,” he said.

“They play really attractive and are close behind us in the table.

“They throw the ball about really well, and we have to be willing to defend in large chunks.

“Our goal line defence will be crucial as well, with their big forward pack close to the line will be a handful, but we are looking forward to the challenge.

“The second half of the season is what people judge your campaign on, so winning these sort of games where expectations are high can give our confidence a considerable boost.

“It’s a cliche that every game is big, but this one is enormous for us, especially with the gap being so close. It’s a must-win.”
