Anger as Brough unfixed water leak wasted water for three weeks

-

A BIG water leak in an East Yorkshire town has not been fixed for three weeks and is wasting thousands of litres of water every day, an angry councillor has said.

East Riding Councillor Terry Gill has slammed Yorkshire Water and claims the company has neglected to fix the leak, which was reported three weeks near Railway Crossing in Skillings Lane, Brough.

Councillor Gill says residents were promised the leak would be fixed last Thursday, but due to bureaucracy surrounding permits, the date to fix the leak keeps getting pushed back.

Yorkshire Water has advised East Riding Council that repairs are due to be made on June 7 and 8, but the dates have already been changed twice.

The local councillor has branded the situation as “scandalous” and challenged the company on how they can let so much water go to waste.

Mr Gill said: “Despite several calls by residents and being followed up by myself it was promised by Yorkshire Water it would be fixed last Thursday (May 26).

“The delay was partly due to obtaining permits from East Riding Highways and Network Rail, due to the leak being within 3 metres of rail property.

“Last Thursday, contractors arrived only to report they discovered the leak wasn’t exactly where they thought, and they would have to come back again, as a road closure would be needed.

“On further chasing up, I was informed by the contractors, Morrisons, that they were aiming to complete by Wednesday, June 1.

“So Thursday comes and no sign of the contractors. I purged then again this afternoon and have now been informed the work is now scheduled for June 7 and 8, mainly due to the bureaucracy of permit delays once again.

“I have written to Yorkshire Water and Network Rail asking for answers and understanding as why they can justify allowing such large volumes of water to go down the drain.

“And why can they work towards more joined-up thinking with other parties.

“It’s absolutely scandalous.

I urge residents to also send in a complaint about this, I think the more the merrier.”

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water said: “The works on Skillings Lane are scheduled for early June following agreement from key partners who also provide services in the area.

“We appreciate our customers patience and are working hard to resolve this issue as soon as possible.”
