AN East Yorkshire mum is unrecognisable after losing an incredible amount of weight in a complete transformation.

Laura Philipson, 36, has lost a staggering 46lbs after she became determined to shed the fat following a lockdown weight gain. Lauren became insecure when she reached the heaviest she had ever been, at 14-and-a-half stone.

She couldn’t stand to look at pictures of herself and would resort to cropping herself out of family photos and hiding her tummy in loose dresses to hide her weight gain.

During a family dog walk, she took a selfie and did not recognise the woman in the photo. From then on, she decided she needed to make a change.

Laura said: “Around Christmas last year, I had gone up a size in all my clothes and didn’t even recognise myself anymore. I then saw an Instagram post for a transformation group and I just decided to go for it and never look back.

“It was so nerve-racking because I had never been into fitness before at all. I’d lost weight through diets before but they were never sustainable long-term.

“I plucked up the courage to go on my own and I’m going to be honest, the session was really tough but once I got over the shock, it became loads of fun. The team is absolutely brilliant and ever so supportive, my husband has even started coming with me to the night sessions.”

The mum-of-two attends a group ran by personal trainer Tom Cowen, who is known in the area for helping his clients achieve dramatic results. Laura’s transformation is from a mixture of changing her diet and taking part in circuit training.

She said: “The thing I was most worried about was changing my eating habits because I love food. However, I learnt that it’s about swapping out unhealthy ingredients to make subtle changes in your meals.

“My absolute favourite meal is paella and I now swap out the rice for quinoa, which makes it a lot healthier. It also tastes really nice and isn’t too restrictive.”

When discussing her biggest challenge, Laura admitted that it was definitely getting started with her fitness journey. She said: “It was just a big decision to fully commit to something like this with no experience but I am so glad that I did.”

As well as improving her overall fitness, Laura said her mental wellbeing has never been better. She believes she has grown more confident, is comfortable with pictures being taken of her and even has a better sleep at night.

The Cottingham mum has said that she is in this for the long haul and is backed by a supportive family.

She said: “My family motivate me so much and never try to tempt me with unhealthy treats which stunts my progress - they’ve been brilliant.

“I would 100 per cent recommend this to people who are thinking of making a change. It is important to take a step back, don’t put too much pressure on yourself and then you will go far.”
