On track for summer fun

Put your best foot forward as the Ramblers looks ahead to finalising a 3,000 mile coastal path

- JANET TANSLEY

SUMMERS beside the sea are what family memories are made of, and that’s why the Ramblers is encouraging everyone to share the joys of walking Britain’s beautiful coastline.

The charity has revealed its new campaign to encourage everyone to explore the crags, cliffs and sandy beaches across the UK as its volunteers and partners look ahead to the official opening celebrations for the England Coast Path in 2023.

Once complete, it will be the world’s longest continuous coastal trail at nearly 3,000 miles long!

The Ramblers is launching a Coast Path Countdown this month as, mile by mile, work continues to connect the remaining stretches of the trail.

“And that’s why we’re calling on families across the UK to join us in celebrating our love of the coast now,” says a spokesperson, “embracing the freedom of long sunny days to head out for a walk by the sea.

“From pretty coastal towns to wide open views and sandy beaches, there’s so much to explore on the UK coastline.”

From June 13, you’ll be able to visit the Ramblers website – ramblers.co.uk – for coastal walking tips, ideas, and inspiration throughout the summer, and you’ll be able download a free summer walking guide.

And, while you’ll never have a problem getting kids to get their shorts or cossies on to splash about on the beach, mum-of-two and Ramblers’ Walk magazine editor Elyssa Campbell-barr has some extra tips to get the most out of sea walks with young children.

■ Buckets and spades are cumbersome, so for shoreline activities, try crabbing lines, telescopic shrimping nets and small bags for collecting shells.

■ Be prepared: Take a charged mobile phone, first-aid kit, water and high energy snacks. Don’t forget the sunscreen, hats and glasses.

■ If your kids don’t have walking boots, opt for sturdy trainers, and get them used to walking – to the shops or school.

And Elyssa adds: “Once your children can comfortably walk a mile or two, leave the crowds behind and find quieter coves or bays.”
