Playing every week and enjoying it at KR has helped for recall

HALL ON ENGLAND CALL-UP

RYAN Hall has attributed the enjoyment he has experienced from his move to Hull KR as a major reason for his international recall.

Hall could make his first appearance at international level since 2019 this weekend if he is included in Shaun Wane’s 17 for England’s game against the Combined Nations All Stars.

It would mark a remarkable journey back to the highest level for Hall, who seemed a long way from the Test arena during his struggles in the NRL with Sydney Roosters in an injury-hit two-season spell Down Under.

But the winger admits that the chance to play regularly again has helped him make his case to Wane, as well as the opportunity to enjoy his rugby again with Rovers.

“I’m certainly enjoying it at Hull KR,” Hall told Rugby League Live.

“I enjoyed Australia though, it just didn’t happen with injuries and certain things going a certain way.

“I was trying to work my way into the best side in the world, I wasn’t guaranteed a shirt and just because I didn’t play too much over there, it wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy it.

“My body just wasn’t in the best shape but playing every week again, you get rhythm and confidence again. I don’t like to think too negatively but it’s been a long journey to this point.

“Having the injuries behind me and doing what I’ve done for the last 18 months, playing every week at Hull KR and enjoying it, I think that’s played a part in getting me recalled.”

Hall also said it was a ‘certainty’ that the postponement of the World Cup to this autumn was a blessing on his behalf.

“If it was last year, I wasn’t in the picture so it’s great for me,” he said.

“It’s worked out well but you have to play with the cards you’re dealt at any one time.

“Nothing is certain yet though and I’ve got to finish the season well with Hull KR to be in that World Cup squad.”

The 34-year-old also admitted it was more special than previous call-ups to be included this week given his exile away from the national team.

“It never gets boring, that’s for sure,” he said.

“But it’s really special this time because it’s a re-introduction.

“It’s getting back to playing for England having been away for a few years.

“I’ve worked hard on my club rugby and that’s what’s helped me get selected.

“So it’s very exciting this time, more so than usual I’d say. I’m really pleased with myself to get back here.”
