Burnley join chase for Twine

Burnley are believed to have emerged as rival suitors for Hull City target Scott Twine. The Tigers always felt that showing their hand, after a reported £4m bid for the 22-yearold MK Dons attacking midfielder was made public last week, would trigger other Championship outfits to similarly declare their interest and that now seems to be the case.

Following their relegation from the Premier League last season, the Clarets cleared out 14 players, including senior professionals Ben Mee, Aaron Lennon, Phil Bardsley, Dale Stephens and Erik Pieters, as well as under-23 hopefuls Joel Mumbongo, Richard Nartey, Anthony Glennon, Ethen Vaughan, Sam Unwin, Anthony Gomez Mancini, Calen Gallagher-allison, Joel Connolly and Harry Allen.

England defender James Tarkowski also decided to move on after the expiry of his Turf Moor contract.

That exodus should clear space on the wage bill for a swoop for Twine and it is understood that the Lancashire outfit are willing to match the transfer fee proposed by

City chief Acun Ilicali last week, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

As yet, there has been no movement since Ilicali discussed a move for Twine with MK Dons and the ex-southampton academy graduate is unlikely to be short of options this summer if he is to leave the Buckinghamshire outfit, having netted 20 times and contributed 13 assists in League One last season.

After finishing third - just a point behind promoted Rotherham - in 2021-22’s third tier, the Dons went on to lose to Wycombe in the playoff semi-finals.

Going up a division would have enhanced the hope of Twine’s current club holding on to his services for next term.

However, with the Tigers and other clubs ready to shell out a tempting transfer fee, it seems unlikely now that he will be lining up against the likes of Forest Green and Accrington in 2022-23.

City are, meanwhile, understood to be moving closer to finalising a deal for USA international striker Haji Wright.

But Mallik Wilks, who only managed three goals in 20 league outings last season, still looks likely to leave the MKM for League One Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
