THE parents of a baby girl have described their horror after their daughter was hit by flying glass shards from thugs throwing a brick at the train they were travelling on.

Esme Emmerson, who is just 15 weeks old, was struck by the fragments while on a Hull-bound train with parents Jason and Kristina on Monday.

The family were travelling home from a day out in Beverley when the carriage was hit by a brick near to Snuff Mill Lane in the afternoon.

The act, described as “totally reckless” by train bosses, luckily didn’t leave tiny Esme with any serious injuries.

Northern, who were operating the Bridlington to Hull service, has condemned the horrific act and is appealing to anyone who can help catch the vandals.

Jason Emmerson and Kristina Vojsovicova said they were sickened and shocked by what happened, saying the brick could have hit Esme herself. The parents are pleading with the people responsible to do the right thing and hand themselves in.

“It all happened so quickly. We were almost arriving into Hull when the brick hit the window and the smashed glass fell into Esme’s pram.

“We were in shock. I’m just so grateful that Esme wasn’t seriously hurt. I want whoever did this to know the impact of their actions.

“They need to hand themselves in to the police.

“It’s a reminder to all parents to make sure to keep your kids safe as anything can happen while travelling with people doing this crazy stuff. That brick could have hit Esme or one of us, but thank God our baby is safe.”

The Northern train had almost arrived into Hull Paragon Station on Monday when one of the carriage’s door windows was struck at around 3.45pm. Due to its proximity to the station, train staff were quickly able to stop and report the act to British Transport Police.

The train has also had to be taken out of service temporarily for repairs. Tony Baxter, regional director for Northern, said: “This was a totally reckless act by mindless individuals who gave no thought for other people’s safety.

“The consequences of a brick hitting a fast-moving train are potentially devastating and we can only give thanks that Esme wasn’t more seriously injured.

“Someone must know who threw that brick and I urge anyone with information about the events that led to Esme being hurt to contact British Transport Police.”

Chief inspector Graham Bridges, from the force, said: “This was a very serious incident that could have had devastating consequences. Passengers, including a tiny baby, could have been seriously injured by the actions of whoever threw this object. Throwing bricks and stones at trains is an incredibly dangerous and reckless thing to do. We are working hard to identify those responsible.”
