Hull’s East Park hosts six-day family festival
A BIG top and marquees have taken over East Park’s playing fields for a week-long summer festival.
The family-friendly Big Malarkey Festival, which is aimed at children, opened on Tuesday and will run until Sunday.
The first four days, from Tuesday to Friday, are reserved for school parties, but the festival opens to everyone at the weekend (Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26).
The festival is being staged on the main playing fields opposite the Holderness Road entrance.
What is happening?
BOOK LOVE: Described as a “dazzling multicultural and educational travelling book carnival and charity tent”, it promises to be “filled to the brim with all things multicultural to browse, buy and enjoy”.
LIBRARY TENT: Meet librarians, get a brand new library card and find out about a new writing competition.
THE HERD: ‘The Herd’ will stage games and fun around the festival site.
STORYTELLING AND DRAWING:
Storytellers, entertainers and illustrators will be entertaining families around the site.
WRITER’S BLOC TENT: Experts will be offering tips to budding writers aged 6-16.
GO WILD IN THE STONE AGE: Learn how to use traditional stone-age methods for keeping warm, clothed and fed.
SENSORY STORYBOOK: A store programme for people with profound learning disabilities.
MAKERSPACE: 3D printing, embroidery machines, woodworking tools, glass and pottery kilns, jewellery making and more.
HULL MARITIME MARQUEE: Get hands-on with objects from Hull museum collections and take part in activities such as crafting and knot tying.
AUTHOR TALKS: A programme of talks by children’s authors is running on Saturday and Sunday.
WHERE TO PARK: The vehicle entrance is via the Woodford Leisure Centre car park, off Holderness Road.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: Include a business centre for budding entrepreneurs, The Rabbit Hole independent bookshop.
■■Tickets cost £5 for adults and £2.50 for children (Under-ones free). A family ticket (two adults and two children) costs £14. A ticket for a disabled adult costs £4 with one carer going free.
