TRAFFIC LIGHTS TO BE ‘REMOVED BY JULY’

WORKS are continuing on Boothferry Bridge with the aim of traffic lights being taken away by next month, East Riding Council has said.

A spokesperson for the council said scheduled improvement works are continuing at the bridge on the A614, which spans the River Ouse.

They said: “The council and our contractors are working extremely hard to be able to remove traffic lights on the bridge by mid-july in a bid to ease traffic congestion.

“Even after that time, work to improve the bridge will need to continue.”

It comes as major refurbishment works began on Boothferry Bridge in November and were originally scheduled to finish by the end of August.

Works include renovations to footpaths, the carriageway, and the steel structure.

Two approach footpaths are being reconstructed and timber ones on the swing span are being replaced along with the addition of a new steel support beam.

A new traffic barrier system has been installed, while the carriageway and footpaths have been re-waterproofed.

Bridge joints are also being replaced and hydraulic pipes are being replaced along with parapet works and upgrades to navigation lights.

Restrictions include limiting access to vehicles with a width of 3.5m and under and a 30mph speed limit, with traffic lights also in place. Access for walkers and cyclists has continued during the works.

But traffic delays caused by the works have been exacerbated by repairs at the M62 Ouse Bridge after a fractured joint was found there in April.

Lane closures were first brought in there in March and were due to end in April but they remain ongoing.

A second eastbound lane reopened to traffic on Monday, June 20.

Council infrastructure and facilities lead Adam Holmes said the works at Boothferry Bridge were critical and essential when they began in November.

At the time, Mr Holmes said: “To carry the work out safely, there will, unfortunately, be some road

closures that will result in disruption and longer journeys for motorists.

However, we will work with our contractor throughout the duration of the construction period to minimise the duration of the road closures and mitigate the effects as far as practicable.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all road users in advance for their patience and understanding during these works.”
