Wilks edges closer to City exit and move to Wednesday

-

MALLIK Wilks is closing in on a move to Sheffield Wednesday, the Mail understands.

Talks have been ongoing between the two clubs over a fee for the 23-year-old striker, who struggled with injury and form in the Championship last season.

Wilks is keen to make the move from East to South Yorkshire and the formalities of the switch are understood to be close to completion, with an expectation the frontman will pen a two-year deal at Hillsborough as part of Darren

Moore’s summer rebuild at the

League One club. The Owls signed striker Michael Smith from Rotherham United this week as Moore stepped up his assault on the transfer market, but despite adding to his forward ranks already in the window, a move for Wilks remains firmly on the table. City activated Wilks’ option year last month in a move designed to help them negotiate a fee for the striker who bagged 24 goals as the Tigers roared to the League One title in the 2020-21 campaign, and it’s likely they’d be looking for a fee in the region of £200,000 for the ex-leeds United man.

Losing Wilks will see the Tigers left with Tyler Smith as their only recognised striker after the departure of Tom Eaves who has joined Rotherham United, and Marcus Forss returned to Brentford at the end of his loan spell.

The Tigers remain hopeful of making new additions before they head to Istanbul to take on Fenerbahce and then onto Marbella for a week-long training camp next month.

One player unlikely to make the move to the Championship club is Scott Twine after the MK Dons star opted to join Vincent Kompany at Burnley.

City had pushed hard to tie up a deal for the youngster, but the lure of Turf Moor and club just relegated from the Premier League appears to have won through.
