Concern over ‘ceiling leaks and damaged machines’ at west Hull gym

MEMBER’S FEARS OVER SAFETY

A MEMBER of a councilrun Hull gym has said leaking ceilings, damaged exercise machines and loose electrical cables have left them fearing for their safety and that of other users.

The gym member, who asked to remain anonymous, said buckets collecting leaking water and machines wrapped in hazard tape had become a regular sight at west Hull’s Costello Stadium.

They added they feared someone would be injured as a result while claiming complaints about the condition of the gym, in Anlaby Park Road North, had fallen on deaf ears.

A Hull Culture and Leisure spokesperson said work was under way to find the source of the leaks and they encouraged people to report all other faults to gym staff.

The anonymous gym user said they were at a loss over what to do about the situation after joining it in January.

They claimed many others shared their concerns about public safety and wanted to be able to train without worrying.

They said: “The gym floor always has buckets of water around where the water leaks through the ceiling above.

“There are loose electric cables, damaged machines and showers that flood everything.

“How on earth the gym has passed a health and safety inspection is beyond me and the fact that it is open to the paying public is a worry.

“I attend because it is within walking distance from my home but I constantly worry about whether I will pick up an injury that day, will slip on the floor, fall over a bucket, contract a disease from the water or get electrocuted.

“I have asked at the gym when these hazards will get fixed and I have submitted a formal complaint alongside others, to no avail.

“Will it take someone being injured before anything gets done? For some of us this is the only community gym nearby and we should be able to train without the risks that go with it.”

A Hull Culture and Leisure spokesperson said all their facilities were regularly checked by staff. The spokesperson said: “We are aware of the leaks at Costello Stadium gym and work is under way by our contractors to identify the source.

“Any damaged equipment is clearly labelled as out of order and made safe to customers until repairs can be carried out.

“We encourage any of our facilities’ users to report damages or safety concerns to a member of staff as soon as possible.”
