If you agree peat compost is best for gardeners, tell your MP

- Peter Auty.

RICH Leeson says he doesn’t disagree with me concerning peat, he must therefore agree that peat in compost is the better medium for gardeners to use for seed germination, root formation when potting on and ericaceous plants.

Most gardeners know that once peat is removed from compost it requires a lot more watering, peat has excellent water holding capabilities hence peat free compost requires a lot more water.

Government policy is not always right, and in the case of banning peat in compost it is so unnecessary and ill thought out. The government formed a petition asking if gardeners wanted peat in compost or not, it was so far hidden that only approx 5,000 people responded and 90 per cent of those were proven to be eco warriors, wokes and environmentalists, I personally did not hear of it until two days before it closed. If more gardeners wrote to their MPS we might just might be able to get a compromise, there are a lot of people out there who disagree with the peat ban.

You ask for facts, Rich Leeson. Fact: In 1986, where this all started, David Bellamy said “that only six percent of peat bogs in Britain were in a good state”.

Fact: He did not mean or say that 94 per cent of peat bogs in Britain were in a state of disrepair, as is being bandied about by the green lobby and environmentalists and BBC funded celebrity gardeners, who should know better.

Fact: 86 per cent of peat bog world wide are untouched by any form of human activity.

Fact: Of the 16 per cent of peat bog that is farmed less than 1 per cent is used in horticulture.

Fact: Peat will never run out as it regenerates quicker than it is farmed.

Fact: The RHS ran trials in 2011 with peat-free compost, it was useless then. They are now running more trials, in the year of the ban, which at present are incomplete.

Fact: The environmentalists are using misinformation to gain government funding.

These are the facts that the green lobbyists will not tell you.

All these facts are available on the internet and yes it does get boring when someone goes against the flow and continually questions things they know are false and misinformed as in the case of the peat ban, it is nonsensical and anyone who disagrees with the peat ban should write to their MP and tell them so.

The trouble is not enough people can be bothered to argue the case, the Government knows this hence the ban will go ahead. But that does not mean debate on the subject should be silenced or stymied, especially something that is so important to millions of gardeners.

I wonder, Rich Leeson, will you write to your MP and tell them you disagree with the peat ban?
