April Fool’s Day 1996 marked 20 years since Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne formed Apple and, when the milestone was brought to their attention, the decision was hurriedly made to produce a limited edition Macintosh computer to celebrate the event. Luckily, they were able to bypass the usual 18+ month gestation period for a new Mac by using concepts that the design team had already been working up for an ‘all-in-one’ Lcd-based design. And so, 11 months later, the TAM was released. Resembling an early millennial karaoke machine sat next to Darth Vader’s biscuit barrel, the TAM had a vertically-mounted 4x SCSI CD-ROM and an Apple floppy Superdrive, a 2GB ATA hard drive, a TV/FM tuner, S-video input card and a custom-made Bose sound system featuring twin ‘jewel’ speakers and subwoofer built into the external power supply base unit. Expensive back then, you won’t necessarily need the wealth of a Russian oligarch in order to get your hands on one now. Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh
