It’s staggering to think that, since the release of the original a little over three years ago, there have been five different models of Apple Watch – such is the relentless evolution of wearable tech. But now it’s time to consign Apple’s first wrist-based super-computer to the Time Machine due to the recent watchos 5 update being the first firmware to drop support for this particular model. Perhaps the biggest surprise when the eagerly-anticipated gadget was released back in 2015 was that it wasn’t called iwatch to keep it in line with Apple’s iphone and ipad range. This was on account of two different electronic companies in two different territories trademarking the name, one of which took Apple to court due to Apple Watch advertising appearing after every Google ‘iwatch’ search. Little has changed in terms of the overall design of the hardware since the first generation. The pressure-sensitive Force Touch screen, multifunctional side button and the Digital Crown are still present and correct in the latest models, as are the interchangeable straps that provide a popular way of personalising your Watch. Who still uses the Mickey faces, though?
