I have been told that it is possible to disconnect from a Wi-fi network on my Mac without turning Wi-fi off completely, is this possible?

Yes it is possible. If you click on the Wi-fi icon in your Mac’s menu bar then you will see that the options are limited. However, if you hold down the option/alt key and then click on the Wi-fi icon you will see that the options contained within have been greatly expanded. Directly underneath your current network will be the option to ‘Disconnect from…’ your current network. Click this to cleanly log off.
