Make it work for you

Loving the look of a classic fireplace? Here’s how to replace a damaged original or dream up a brand-new feature

- EMMA’S CHOICE: A CHARACTER FIREPLACE

Reinstating a fireplace will restore character to a room. Whether you decide to go faux and fill it with candles or opt for the real thing, a fireplace makes a fabulous focal point.

Q How do I begin?

First, decide if you want a fireplace simply as a decorative feature or as a real fire, which will provide warmth as well as looks, in which case you will need to consider the fuel type. A fireplace is usually made of three components: the surround which holds everything together, the hearth on which it sits and the insert, which is the inner section and is usually decorative.

Q What advice do I need?

If you want to use your fire, buy your fireplace from a reputable supplier who can advise on safety and suitability for purpose. Seek advice regarding fitting, heat output and fuel types: most good fireplace showrooms will offer an installation service or be able to recommend registered (Gas SAFE/HETAS) installers.

Q What are the options?

Reproduction fire surrounds come in a host of styles and are typically made of marble, stone, cast iron or wood, with wood or wood effect usually the most affordable and easy to install, but often specified as suitable for use with electric fires only. Marble and stone are durable, suitable for most fire types and can look impressive, while cast iron instantly creates period style. Q How do I know what size to choose? Generally, fireplaces are available in widths of 1520mm and 1370mm, but they do vary as there is no such thing as a standard size chimney breast. The aim is to choose a size that creates a sense of balance with the proportions of your room.

“There is no wrong pick when choosing a fire surround, other than to ensure it is an item of beauty and that it complements the rest of the decor in the room ” MIKE JOHNSON, ENGLISH FIREPLACES
