Windowless spaces need more care and attention than those blessed with natural light – check out the options

-

Many of us feel left in the dark when it comes to getting bathroom lighting right. A bit of knowledge about which fittings to choose and where to position them is all that’s required.

Q would a simple overhead ceiling light suffice?

In a word, no. Layers of light from a variety of sources are the secret to making sure your bathroom is a relaxing and functional space that can easily adapt to different tasks. To achieve this, you’ll need a mix of ambient, task and accent lighting.

Q what is ambient lighting?

Ambient lights provide overall illumination. Downlights are popular, they are mounted on or recessed into the ceiling and direct light downwards. Avoid laying them in a regular grid formation as it’ll create a flat, bland effect. Instead, think about where you most need overhead lighting and focus on these areas.

Q what is task lighting?

Task lighting, as you might imagine, provides light for specific tasks. In the bathroom, these could be putting on make-up or shaving so it’s likely you’ll need task lighting around your bathroom mirror. Installing wall lights either side of the mirror works well, or you could consider a mirror with integrated lighting. Don’t position a downlight straight above your head: it’ll cast unflattering shadows across your face.

Q what is accent lighting?

The best way to add a relaxing quality to your windowless bathroom is with accent lighting, which highlights particular areas or objects for aesthetic rather than functional purposes. Highlight wall niches with downlights or easy-fit strip lights, which will provide a soft glow when you’re relaxing in the bath, while LED strip lights under a wall-mounted vanity or bath will create a floating effect.

“Dimmers are important in bathrooms. Turn them up for bright, invigorating light in the morning, and down for softer, atmospheric light in the evening”
