Bins left unlifted for over a month

- By William Smith

BINS at an Enniskillen apartment block were not lifted for almost five weeks, a concerned resident has said.

The recycling and residual bins at an apartment block at No. 10 Cornagrade Road were left overflowing after collections were missed on two consecutive occasions.

This left residents with full bins for several weeks, with bin bags and rubbish piling up by the day.

Bins were eventually lifted following representations from a local councillor, and complaints from residents.

However, one resident - who wishes to remain anonymous - said this isn’t the first time that bin collections have been missed in the area.

“Residents have once again been left in a dire situation with the bins,” the resident said.

“The apartment block is on a slope, so it is very hard for residents to get rubbish out when bins are missed. On this particular occasion, it was particularly bad.

“Recycling bins weren’t lifted for just under five weeks, and there was a serious build-up [of rubbish]. Undoubtedly, this attracts rodents, cats and foxes to the apartment block.

“It is also very unsightly and doesn’t help the look of the place much.

“Thankfully, the bins were eventually lifted, but it was hard-fought.

“I feel that as ratepayers, the Council should be providing us with a better service. Areas around Cornagrade have their bins lifted regularly - why are we the odd ones out?”

The resident added: “I have personally been in touch with the Council four times in the past few years about missed collections. This is a recurring thing, and it’s not good enough.”

Councillor Thomas O’reilly, Sinn Féin, said he was contacted about the missed collections at Cornagrade, and made representations to the Council.

He said the Council is working to resolve issues surrounding ongoing missed collections in the Enniskillen area.

A spokesperson from Fermanagh and Omagh District Council said: “The Council is aware that scheduled residual and recycling bin collections at an apartment block in Enniskillen were missed on two consecutive occasions.

“These were prioritised and collections were completed on March 25.

“The Council acknowledges that there has been some disruption to its refuse collection service over the past 12 months, and issued a statement on March 1.
