Helena and Derek celebrate success in special Easter stableford competitions

-

THE ladies golf season kicked off on Tuesday March 26 with the traditional ‘Bring and Win’ nine hole competition.

The winner over the nine holes, with a great score of 22 points, was Orla Foster. Orla is considered to be one of our younger members. Given this and her current form, we can expect a lot more from Orla in the future.

The runner up with 19 points, just returned from her travels in New Zealand, was Rita Mckechnie. Rita, also recuperating from injury, is keeping quiet about NZ but it certainly has done her golf no harm. Keep it up Rita.

Over the Easter break, the club ran a ladies and gents stableford competition on Saturday March 30. In the ladies section, well out in front of the posse with 37 points was Helena Tisdall. Helena’s handicap does not reflect the golf she is capable of. Hopefully with the pressure of Lady Captain and past Lady Captain over, Helena can reach her full potential and continue to show what she is really capable of. Runner up with 32 points was the ever resilient

Patricia Durnien who seems to have to regular spot on the podium.

The Saturday’s gents 18 hole stableford competition saw some impressive early season performances from club stalwarts, with two of the top three, playing in the same group in the form of Ian Lyttle and Conor Daly.

Lyttle has been a great addition to club pro Chris Gaunt’s growing stable of players. His run of good form continued with 38 points in his first 18 holes of the season securing him third place. It was big hitting Daly (not to be confused with John Daly), who took second place honours with a mighty 44 points.

However it was the ‘sweet talking’ Derek Elliott who took the first place with an impressive 44 points beating Conor Daly on a better back nine. Despite a hattrick of 7s, he knuckled down and proved there’s no quit in him. He bounced back with two birdies in four holes and was enough to clinch the top spot for this week.

This week kicks off the season proper with the first of the men’s monthly medals on Wednesday, sponsored by Mark Mcvitty Electrical. The Ladies April Monthly Medal on Tuesday, is sponsored by Lady Captain Jackie Crawford. This coming Saturday, the Men’s and Ladies competition is kindly sponsored by Carefree Travel.

The big news of the week is that elusive Joker has been found. The “Find the Joker” ticket was drawn on Easter Monday and the lucky person was Trevor Camley who picked Number 46 winning £5,450.

Confirming that it wasn’t a cruel April Fools prank, he immediately ensured that all in the bar were treated to a drink.

Tanya Cathcart has been appointed as our Entertainments Convenor and has Susan May and Joanne Daly on her team. Lady Captain Jackie and club secretary Barbara Thompson dutifully attended the Golf Ireland AGM and awards on Saturday past. Information from that meeting will be filtered down at a later date.

This year the long running Thursday ball/legs (Ladies of

Enniskillen Golf Society) will be headed up by Sally Redman and Linda Mcdowell. All ladies are welcome to participate. Many thanks to Sally Redman for organising the weekly coffee morning during the winter season.
