Sean takes top honours under much-needed sun at weekend

-

RESULTS

WE FINALLY seem to have bypassed some of the horrendous weather conditions and the course is beginning to firm up somewhat.

Last Wednesday’s Stableford was claimed by Sean Flanagan on a 31 with Kevin Brennan and Rory Mcbarron chasing in 2nd and 3rd places. The weekend brought some badly needed sunshine and Sean Leonard made lots of use of it posting a 39 to take top honours from Kevin Brennan and Roly Curran.

Roly is turning in some consistent rounds with a win and three top three finishes. Consistent stuff from Roly, maybe eyeing up a run at Golfer of the Year. Too early to tell yet but competition will come hard and fast now.

Cathy Mccabe sealed her second consecutive win in the Ladies section perhaps inspired by the current run of Nelly Korda who was imperious once more in the Chevron.

This week we are continuing with a Champagne Scramble so get a team together for this fun format and give it a blast. Also this week the Stableford Open Competitions continues at the weekend and we are having the second medal of the year.

Every golfer worth their salt wants to score well in the stroke format and this is a genuinely useful tool to help you see where you are at in your game. Remember Golfer of the Year points available for this one so expect stiff competition.

Captains’ Weekend

A lively group of members headed off to play on the absolutely stunning Carne Links in Belmullet over two days a couple of weeks ago and what an experience. Easily one of the best links courses in the country with amazing scenery but the course layout and the design of the holes are second to none. Scoring was difficult in very breezy conditions but it was a hugely enjoyable weekend spent in great company. A huge thanks to Brian for organising the event and without a doubt a course I will return to.

Fundraising

We have launched a new fundraising event called ‘Get the Joker’. 53 cards are available each week as they are bought and turned each has a monetary value but the Joker is the jackpot with a starting value of €500 which will increase by €50 each week until he is found. Draws on a Tuesday night with tickets on sale via the webpage Blackliongolfclub.com or in the clubhouse.

Team Competitions

Much thanks to Gaby Fee for organising our Mixed Fourball team and hard luck on the day losing out to a very strong Warrenpoint side. Great to see so many members getting involved via some cajoling from Gaby. It’s a great honour to represent your club and as a club we are very grateful and proud of all those who take the call to play in these prestigious events. Next up is the Ulster Fourball led by Quinton Carroll and I believe that they have been getting in a few practice rounds so best of luck to all involved. There are still places available for standby and opportunities to take part in these competitions is a great learning experience for your game so if your interested let any committee member know or give Quinton a shout. He’ll be delighted to hear from you. After that Jimmy Donovan leads out our Pierce Purcell team and the same applies a few spaces are left here so get involved.
