DIVISION Three of the Ladies’ football season got underway at the weekend following the first weekend of action in Divisions One and Two.

Knockninny grabbed a late goal to defeat Irvinestown by a point in Division Three while Ederney stormed to a 5-11 to 2-06 win over Brookeborough Division Two.

In Division One, Derrygonnelly and Kinawley recorded big wins over Aghadrumsee and Belcoo respectively.

Newly promoted Belcoo suffered a heavy loss to Kinawley with a 1-18 to 0-01 scoreline at Macnean Park on Sunday.

A young O’rahilly’s side set up defensively against Barry Mckenna’s team and kept them at bay until the 13th minute when Joanne Doonan finally landed the first score of the game.

Doonan hit three more points in the half with Danielle Maguire grabbing the other while Elaine Maguire pointed at the other end to leave the halftime score at 0-05 to 0-01.

Spaces began to open up more for Kinawley in the second half as their opponents tired.

Lisa Maguire netted the only goal of the game in the 35th minute while there would be further points from Gemma Mccaffrey (3), Lisa Maguire (3), Roisin O’reilly (2), Megan Murphy (2) as Doonan also brought her tally up to seven points for the day.

Derrygonnelly got their league campaign underway with a 5-12 to 1-07 win over Aghadrumsee.

The Harps took in a strong 4-07 to 1-04 at halftime over last year’s Intermediate champions as they went on to score a further 1-05 in the second half.

Eimear Smyth helped herself to 1-06 while Bronagh Smyth and Lynne Carroll both hit 2-02, Tara Mcloughlin also registered two points for the home side.

Aoife Mccabe hit four points for Aghadrumsee and Laura Grew converted a first-half penalty as Niamh Lambe and Dearbhla Murphy made up the rest of the Magpies’ scores.

A strong second-half performance from Ederney in Brookeborough saw them run out comfortable winners after a close first half between the sides.

Ederney took an early lead with scores from Briege Walsh, Katie Teague and Dearbhla Mcmenamin as Walsh then hit two goals.

Nuala Mcmanus and Aoife Wray kept the home side in the game with points before Brookeborough ended the half scoring 2-01 with goals from Aimee-rose Mcmanus and Megan Wray to make the halftime score 2-05 to 2-04 in favour of the away side.

Walsh completed her hat-trick with a second-half penalty, however, Brookeborough hit a third goal through Edel Woods.

A brace from Teague added to further points from Mcmenamin, Ellie Kerrigan, Niamh Harte and Sadhb Mcaleer as Ederney eventually eased to victory despite another Brookeborough point from Wray.

Meanwhile, Knockninny just edged Irvinestown in their Division Three opener. The sides went into halftime all square, at 2-02 to 0-08, after Amy Hanlon scored 1-01 and Alana Ward found the net with a point from Ciara Mcdermott for the hosts.

Molly Quinlan led the scoring for Knockninny as she converted a handful of frees with points also coming from Molly Flanagan from half-back.

In the second half, Knockninny continued to tag on points with another Irvinestown goal coming from Kelsey Ward.

With St. Molaise’s winning by three heading into the latter stages, Knockninny sent midfielder Allanah Maguire into full-forward and she caught a high ball in before drilling it into the net to tie the contest.

Knockninny then won a free from the resultant kick out just in front of the sideline and it was moved closer to goal after being kicked away by an Irvinestown defender. Quinlan stepped up and converted the free to win the game in the dying seconds.

Elsewhere in Division Three, Derrygonnelly B failed to field against Maguiresbridge.

Aghadrumsee and Belcoo meet in Division One this weekend with Derrygonnelly playing Tempo and Kinawley playing Newtownbutler.

In Division Two, Ederney face Belnaleck, Brookeborough play Devenish and Enniskillen Gaels take on Lisnaskea.

In Division Three, Knockninny will try to build on last weekend’s win against St. Pats, Erne Gaels play Kinawley B and Derrygonnelly B play Irvinestown.
