Win for Fermanagh as they bounce back against Cavan
Celtic Challenge
Fermanagh 3-08
Cavan 1-03
FERMANAGH minor hurlers bounced back from a previous defeat to Leitrim to record a morale boosting win over Cavan in Lissan on Saturday.
And the winners were not flattered by their margin of victory as they clicked as a unit and Cavan had no real answers.
The winners led by 3-02 to 0-02 at half-time.
Conor Delaney opened the scoring for Cavan after about seven minutes with a pointed free. But two minutes later Donal O’connor pounced on a partially cleared high ball into the Cavan square to give the home side some real momentum.
Fermanagh added two points from Ben Palmer with Delaney responding for the visitors.
Palmer then scored a brilliant solo goal after running 40 metres and added a further point.
Sean Mcevoy got the Erne County’s third goal just before the break as the gifted 15 year old struck a sweet goal to leave the home side leading by 3-02 to 0-02 at the break.
In the second half Palmer and Aodan Maguire stretched the home side’s lead.
Daire Donegan and Mcevoy completed the scoring.
Cavan hit back with a goal six minutes from the end from Delaney and an Oisin Reilly point, but it was too little too late.
A pleased Erne boss, Cyril Dunne lauded a great team performance.
“This was a very good win and all the lads played really well and I am proud of them.
“Ronan Brennan led by example and Ben Palmer was outstanding and we were missing three big dual players in James Tierney, Dan
O’connor and Gavin Mccann.
“We tried to change the fixture during the week to allow the footballers to play but
Cavan did not accommodate us.
“We gave a debut to a Joe Mcgoldrick from the Knocks and he was a revelation and he is staking a claim to a regular slot.
“But it was a great team display and the lads made light of the absence of the three dual players.”
